Bluenote

Dusky Blue Snow

So, having been absent again for awhile I thought I’d tell you why…. another of my periodic disclosures.

Seems during the time since Lynda’s son Craig died I’ve transitioned from grief through into another round of clinical depression. Where the boundary may have been isn’t important, only that I’ve arrived here again. During these many months I’ve been actively self-monitoring… but, you know the saying about the doctor who treats himself; he has a fool for a patient.

This is my third period of clinical depression. The first two were spaced about 10 years apart; it is now about 8 years since my last descent into the abyss. So goes the cycle – this wasn’t unexpected. Perhaps if circumstance had been different then this wouldn’t have come about but the only really important thing is dealing with it appropriately NOW.

A couple of weeks ago I saw my physician for a routine Rx renewal appointment and as chance would have it he had some time on his hands for a change. He started a pretty lengthy Q & A session about life, work, relationships, finances… the whole gamut. At the end of it he asked whether I had any feelings about being medicated or not. ‘For….?’, I asked. ‘Clearly you are depressed’, says he. ‘Er, um, hrph, well’. We decided on a newer, cleaner version of a SSRI anti depressant which is to have fewer side effects than the older version. It’ll take another couple of weeks for it to build up in my system to the point where I can expect to feel any effect.

A quick shout out to a blog friend who, having reviewed my posts of the last few months, gave me the heads up that I wasn’t relating as I used to do…. and perhaps it was time to stop waiting and act on the symptoms. Kudos – good read.

I’m not overly upset by this setback. Just sticking to my daily routine and trying to be good to myself – food, rest, vitamins. That sort of thing. Looking for ‘the joy’ in the small things like music and the mild winter we’re having.

So, I’m okay. Just sometimes I have little to say here around the blog. Cheers – be back soon.

Seesaw

January 25, 2012

Yo-yo, rollercoaster….. that is what this winter has been like so far. Lots of fast moving fronts coming from all directions.

Frosty View

This shot was from after one of just a very few really cold nights. Any time we’ve had a snowstorm it has stayed on the ground for a couple of days because it’s been followed by days of rain. This, to my mind, is what a Vancouver winter would be like. Nice, but I’m not used to it being so mild and wet.

I haven’t been around here much because there really isn’t much new. I was sick for those first couple of weeks of the year and have been taking it relatively easy on myself – not pushing to ‘get things done!’. A few outings with Mom, a visit from Owen and his Mom, a dinner out with a few of Lynda’s siblings…. that’s about it.

Imprint Oak

The weather hasn’t been that condusive to picture taking either so I don’t have much of anything to share thataway. I will be back though – sooner than later, I hope.

Counting Down

December 20, 2011

Speechless Pause

Day by day we’re getting a little closer to Christmas and the end of another year. I just did a quicky browse through my posts for the year thinking I might re-post a few favourite pictures as a Top 10, or Top 5. Out of slightly more than 40 posts for the year I found only a few pictures I would put out there again. Is it because so few of them have people in them, I wonder? Less emotional connection perhaps. In any case I’ll try to pull a few together here and maybe post a couple that didn’t make it to the pages here. Lemme see:

Autumn Colours

Our four-legged Godsend, Milo.

Sunset Reflection

…a warm, bright place to work full of warm, bright people.

Mountain, Sun, Cloud

… a reminder of travels and the massive grandeur of nature.

I (heart) Tree

 I DO have a sentimental side…. see!

Caitlyn Isabel

A joyful addition to the family…. a wee, big blessing.

Visual Impact

Ridge banked by cedar

Our two-legged Godsend, Owen. Lynda’s nightly phone buddy has helped her keep her sanity.

pox upon hand

There I think that should be about 10. I’m actually surprised there are that many that still stand up for me. I’m adding one more (if I can find it) of the prettiest young lady I know.

Madison

.. and the one fave lady in my life – unfortunate about the hand / arm placement but it was to see her having such a good time.

Auntie Lynda; 4 nieces

I’ll likely be back again before Christmas but just in case that doesn’t happen I’d like to extend my best wishes for a very happy Christmas season to everyone.

This by Irving Penn

December 15, 2011

In that Irving Penn image search I came across this photo. It’s one I cut out of a photography magazine back in the 70’s and has been on continuous display ever since in a little black frame. Stunning visual impact in high contrast.

Not Irving Penn

December 15, 2011

….whose body of work included some of the most famous and notable of people but also the mundane details of the everyday like cigarette butts.

Nor, Rorschach and his famed ink blot psychological tests.

No, these are a few coffee, hot chocolate and latte spills.

X marks the spot

you go that way; i'll go this way. meetcha laterhigh impact

On a related tangent…. another found shot.

air kiss

A completely unrelated note – It’s been raining steadily since yesterday afternoon and I’M NOT COMPLAINING because ordinarily at this time of year it would mean shovelling snow… and I’m so not into that. So, rain away and stay mild…. bring it on, baby.

Walking The Lakeshore

December 13, 2011

Having some time to fill I headed down to the beachfront for some fresh air and sunshine.

To the east

It didn’t take long for the camera / phone to come out and start snapping away.

To the west

It seemed funny to be in such a large park and it be practically deserted. I passed a few folks out for a brisk walk and a couple of dog-walkers but they were sparse. Mostly stacked picnic tables, leafless trees and empty walkways.

Due south

Good to relax, stretch the legs and powerwalk into the wind.

Rivulet in the sand (my fave)

I like the last picture because the water is transparent at this angle but really brings out the tonal range in the sand. Just a wee spring coming out of an embankment and making its way into the lake.

What’s new, hmmmm….?? well, we didn’t have an Xmas tree so we paid a visit to the Evil Empire (aka Walmart) and picked up a decent sized one along with a bunch of new ornaments. We spent a couple of hours around dinner time Saturday assembling the beast and adorning it. Good times. Then lolling about watching a seasonal movie – sort of paying half attention to it – and admiring the tree, decorations and lights. More good times…. and early to bed.

Mom got moved in with younger sis Linda on Saturday. I managed to stay out of this move as bro-in-law Mike had lots of help; younger, stronger help. We dropped over Sunday for our first look at the place and they’ve found a nice spot. I think they’ll all be happy there.

Light Wash

Things to do, places to go, people to see……. later!

Weather Affected

December 6, 2011

I’m off to a late start posting this month because dreary weather sucks the life out of me; that and we had a busy weekend, too.

Ta-Dah!

Here is the extent of the snow we got that day last week. Wow, eh? Since then all it has done, pretty much, is rain some more, and more, and more….. you get the idea. I’m really not used to this sort of duration…. and this blog is beginnning to be a regular weather report, isn’t it?

We have had a few late day breaks in the crummy, yucky stuff; to whit –

Cordouroy Clouds

If anyone followed that series of articles that I shared on Facebook regarding women and alcohol… I’ve been cooresponding with the author of the series (the Atkinson Series @ thestar.com), Ann Dowsett Johnston. One smart, insightful lady. She is looking for people to ‘out’ themselves in order to battle the stigma associated with alcoholism. I wished her luck with that, in that, most people in 12 Step recovery won’t go against the traditions in A.A. regarding anonymity. A shame really…. wouldn’t you rather be known as a recovering alcoholic than a practicing one? I would.

Bingle Jells

Lynda has hauled out the boxes of decorations and begun decking the halls. Now we have to get out and buy a tree. Owen and family will be here for the couple of days before Xmas; then head for home so he can have Xmas morning at home before going on to other family for dinner.

Ha, ha…. forecast…. cool, clearing and no precip for a few days. Yippee!! Gotta go now. Have a good one.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5…..

November 30, 2011

continuous days of rain.

I was going to bitch about all the moisture we’ve been enjoying but I just went upstairs for another coffee and it’s SNOWING!!!! We have been getting a lot of unseasonably warm temps, well above normal, and thought we might get through November without any snowfall. C’est la vie. Hold on – here we go!

Nine Times Nothing II

November 23, 2011

Oh, it’s one of those mornings when Milo had me up far before I wanted to be out of bed. Just wanted to snuggle back down into the warmth and catch a few more zzzz’s. What is it they say about best laid plans? Ah yes, they often go awry. Murphy!  Sort of a brain-dead haze in front of the computer catching up on news and posting a couple of pics on Facebook.

Things to do – must get motivated and moving. Murphy!

Glimmer

Looks like the cloud is cupping the sun, doesn’t it?

Must choose my attitude before I head out into society at large. Clean up; show up; give it a shot.

Co-ordinate my colours and put a smile on my face.

Seek wisdom from the ancients. Ssssh…. listen and you will hear.

Okay – I’m ready to face the day. Have a good one!

Product Endorsement

November 21, 2011

Seeing as how I’m not overly impressed with an awful lot these days (well, certain music, certainly) I thought I’d share this….. because I think it IS beautiful and well executed.

Lynda bought this from a friend at work who sells for PartyLite. It’s a crackled glass cylinder with what looks like a silver acetate overlay adhered to it. The overlay has been stencil cut or otherwise etched away to create the tree silhouette. It looks good during daylight but really comes alive after dark with a candle glowing within it. The crackle glass gives it a shimmery effect.

Illuminated from Within

Now why couldn’t I have thought of something like that? Simply beautiful.
