A Little Skywatch Friday

October 27, 2011

Now I haven’t contributed here for a long, long time so I’ve refreshed myself with the hows, the whys, and the rules. This post goes out to my blogbuddy Kel at xfacta to whose gentle proddings I have succumbed. She’s a good lady. (oh, … and BTW, my most viewed post ever was one for Skywatch … let’s go for a record!)

So here I am about a 30 minute drive east of Toronto’s suburbs on the north shore of Lake Ontario. We had a gorgeous stretch of weather a few weeks ago over our Thanksgiving weekend but since then (with the exception of a couple of hours on a couple of days) it has done nothing but rain with pretty much solid cloud cover. To whit:

cold front closing in

This one was taken while driving to work using my Samsung cellphone. The clouds looked to me like a wave breaking ashore.

Later on at work I got this one:

looking a little threatening

with the clouds glowering over the tops of a couple of the university buildings. But just so you don’t think it has all been like that forever and a day (tho some days it has seemed like that) we also get a few patches like this:

a sunny autumn day

Just for good measure – last month I was visiting my son and his family in Calgary AB and I took this one as we neared Banff on a wee day trip.

Mountain, Sun, Cloud

Thanks Kel for the nudge. Enjoy folks – be back sooner than later next time. (p.s. – you’ll notice there is a ‘word cloud’ on the right sidebar. There are half a dozen other posts under ‘clouds’. Feel free to browse.) And check out other folks Skywatch contributions too: LINK

Eye On The Skies

October 2, 2009

Though I haven’t participated in about a month I got some shots of our stormy skies this week that I thought I’d share with the Skywatch Friday crew. We’ve had a slow moving low pressure system passing over Southern Ontario which has brought all sorts of rain and some pretty fierce winds. All these shots are from my cell phone camera; two of them taken while driving.

Something a Little Different

August 14, 2009

Please feel free to join in the fun at Skywatch Friday and submit your own shots.

As for something different….. these next couple of shots were taken last week, on succeeding nights, of the full moon. (Once again  – these are cell phone shots which will explain the quality of the images.) In the first shot Jupiter is trailing the moon; 24 hours later Jupiter is leading their march across the sky. As I was driving home about dawn that 2nd morning the moon was setting close to the horizon and Jupiter had swung directly below it. Because they were so bright they were the last visible celestial objects in the sky.

That week presented a range of weather – sun, cloud, storms, high humidity – essentially if you didn’t like what was going on outside all you had to do was wait 15 minutes and it would have changed. One very humid morning I drove home through a heavy fog.

These last few days have seen the arrival ( finally) of full southern Ontario summer with a beautiful high pressure system bringing clear skies, high temps (mid 80’sF) and lower humidity. Wednesday was the first time this year I heard the loud buzzing whine of the cicada which I understand needs sustained temps over 80F to begin making it’s distinctive sound.

Time Lapse

August 7, 2009

… and frame shift. This is a post submitted for ‘Skywatch Friday’. This last week has seen some pretty heavy weather roll through including severe thunderstorms and yesterday a tornado warning. I grabbed these the other day because I liked the dramatic lighting of the clouds, the shifts in density. Sometimes the best scenery is right outside your back door if only you take the time to look. (BTW, these were taken with my cell phone camera.)

Skywatch Friday (#54)

July 24, 2009

This is my first stab at submitting a shot at Skywatch Friday. To see all entries go to their Home Page here: http://skyley.blogspot.com  My entry should drop into the list around 234.

These are some cell phone camera shots taken while driving: The top one as I drove to work one evening; the following 3 as I drove home the next morning in the space of about 5 minutes.

Yes, I know I should be watching the road but one eye is always on the sky.
